Homeowners Insurance FAQ That You Should Know

There is no such thing as a dumb question, and we have several questions about homeowner’s insurance that might help you.

I have had a claim. What do I do now?

Call your agent, who will be happy to discuss the claim and the next steps. Your agent can often jump-start the process by contacting your insurance company directly. Your agency can be a reliable resource during your claim process. Once the claim process starts, we will direct you to talk directly to your claims representative first, but we are happy to assist if the process gets challenging.

What is a deductible?

A deductible is the portion of a covered loss you will need to pay before the insurance company becomes responsible for payment under the policy. For example, if the covered claim is $3,500 and your deductible is $500, you will pay the first $500, and your insurance company will pay the remaining $3,000.

After my home is damaged, should I proceed with temporary repairs?

In general, you must first protect your home from further damage. If repairs to the house are required, you should make reasonable and necessary repairs to protect your home and keep an accurate record of repair expenses, including receipts. Example – Adding a tarp to your roof should a hole exist.

Will I be repaid for the temporary repairs I did to further protect my home?

If a covered loss damages your home, your policy covers the reasonable cost for temporary repairs made to protect your home from further damages.

My repair person has found additional damages from the loss that was not on the initial estimate – what do I do?

It is possible that further damages could be exposed once a repair process begins. If this happens, contact your claims representative to discuss. They may want to send someone to take an additional look, or they will request an updated copy for the estimate and proceed from there.

What if I do not agree with my claims representative’s estimate?

Sometimes, despite best efforts, differences of opinion do occur. When you disagree with the evaluation of your claims adjuster, please get in touch with your claims representative to discuss the differences.

I have replacement cost coverage on the content of my home – what does this mean?

Under the Personal Property Reimbursement provision, the policy will pay up to the policy limits to replace covered damaged, destroyed, or stolen property of like kind and quality.

Why does the check I received from my Insurance Company include the name of my mortgage holder?

If you have a mortgage on your property, the mortgagee is usually named on your policy and included on claims payment checks for damages to your home. You will need to contact your mortgagee to find out how to obtain their endorsement on the check.

I have had a claim; will my premium increase?

Many factors go into answering this question; such factors are the type of policy coverages chosen, prior claim history, loss type, and tenure with your insurance company. The best source to answer this question is to contact your agent, who will be happy to discuss your individual circumstances.
