As of the 2010 U.S. census, it has been reported that Affton, MO has 20,307 residents. That works out to a population density of 4,480 people per square mile.
How Affton got its name. Johann Aff opened a general store in 1872. Besides owning a truck garden and operating the general store, he also served as the first postmaster of the area. For mailing purposes, the area began being referred to as Aff’s town and eventually Affton. Johan Aff is buried near Affton, just inside the St. Louis City limits.
The area which now comprises Affton was once part of a Spanish land grant made to Gregoire Sarpy. Sarpy owned a tract of about 6,000 acres located just southwest of St. Louis City.
In the 1820’s a Scotsman by the name of Kenneth McKenzie purchased from Sarpy a tract of about 3,000 acres. McKenzie had made his fortune in the fur trade and decided to settle down to the life of a farmer. McKenzie Road named after Kenneth McKenzie is a four-lane stretch of road that runs right through the center of Affton.
Important Landmarks Located in Affton, MO.
Ulysses S. Grant original log cabin originally named “Hardscrapple”. The Grant family only lived in the cabin for three months. The cabin can be seen from Gravois Road.
Ulysses S. Grant family home is known as White Haven. The home is located at 7400 Grant Rd., St. Louis, MO 63123. Ironically, White Haven has painted a very lime green color. The Grant family lived on the property from 1854 to 1859.
Oakland House. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1969. Oakland House was built in 1853/1854 by the Benoist family.
